2020-2021 Board Applications


Applications are open to serve on the SUMASA Board for the 2020-2021 academic year! Please submit this form NO LATER THAN Wednesday, April 15th, 2020, at 11:59pm.

SUMASA Board members are elected by the SUMA student body to represent and advocate on behalf of students, foster engagement across the SUMA community, and host meaningful professional development and networking opportunities. Candidates will introduce themselves and read statements at Election Night, which will take place over Zoom on Thursday, April 16th at 8:15pm. Online voting will be open from April 16-20th.  For more information, see www.sumasa.org.

To apply/run for a position: For President and Symposium Co-Chair positions, candidates must be planning to enroll at least part-time for both semesters in the upcoming academic year (Fall 2020 and Spring 2021). For all other positions, candidates must be planning to enroll at least part-time for the upcoming Fall 2020 semester. Candidates must submit a headshot and a concise pitch (<250 words) to the SUMA student body explaining why they are qualified for the position. Headshots and pitch paragraphs will be posted on the SUMASA website. Application materials can be submitted through this online application form.

To nominate someone for a position: If you know a fellow SUMA student who you know would be a good fit for a position on the SUMASA board, you can submit your nomination through this online application form.

President: The SUMASA President is the lead for organizing and collaborating with students, faculty, and administration. He/she is responsible for creating a productive student organization through effective management. This role is ideal for students with strong leadership, interpersonal, and project management skills.

Vice President of Academic Affairs: The VP of Academic Affairs acts as the bridge between SUMA students, faculty, and administration by advising students on academic questions, advocating for student needs to program administrators and faculty, and coordinating events that complement SUMA’s academics. This role is ideal for students with strong interpersonal and project management skills and a good understanding of SUMA’s academic offerings and requirements.

Vice President of Finance: The VP of Administration & Finance handles behind-the-scenes operations by overseeing SUMASA’s budget, supporting its strategic goals, and facilitating board activities. This role is ideal for students who are deadline-driven, organizationally minded, and financially focused.

Vice President of Communications: The VP of Communications facilitates students’ connection to all things SUMA, including managing social media platforms, event promotion, the newsletter, and updating the SUMASA website. This role is ideal for students with strong organizational and writing skills and a love of social media.

Vice President of Community Outreach: The VP of Community Outreach acts as a liaison between SUMA and the sustainability opportunities that New York City offers across all sectors by organizing industry visits and volunteer events. This role is ideal for students who are outgoing, strong networkers, and always on the lookout for opportunities.

Vice President of Events: The VP of Events is responsible for coordinating on- and off-campus events to give students a forum to connect outside of the classroom. This role is ideal for students with an interest in event logistics and strong organizational skills.

Symposium Chair (2 roles): The Symposium Co-Chairs are responsible for the design and implementation of the Annual Sustainable Perspective Symposium by coordinating with potential speakers and setting up logistics for SUMASA’s flagship event. This role is ideal for students with strong interpersonal, event planning, and project management skills.
