It's finally spring! Please join SUMASA and our friends at the Columbia School of Social Work for a Central Park Picnic event on Saturday, April 20th 2013 from 12pm-4pm. Food and beverages will be provide. All you have to do is show up with your blanket, sport equipment and/or book (reading materials). Let’s get together for a day of fun and relaxation! Please join SUMASA for a special film screening of "Do the Math" on Sunday, April 21st at 7pm in IAB Room 403. In conjunction with 350.org, Columbia University will be one of hundreds of venues across the country showing "Do the Math" about the rising movement to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis and fight the fossil fuel industry. ECO & SUMASA Film Screening “Trashed” – Thursday, April 18th

Join SUMASA and ECO (The SIPA Environmental Coalition) for a screening of the film "Trashed" on Thursday, April 18th at 8:15pm in Room 407 IAB! “Trashed” is a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America. The garbage business. The film examines a fundamental element of modern American culture…the disposal of what our society defines as “waste.” It is an issue influenced by every American, most of whom never consider the consequences. Nor, it seems, the implications to our biosphere. At times humorous, but deeply poignant, “Trashed” examines the American waste stream fast approaching a half billion tons annually.

Sustainable Perspectives Symposium: The Systems Approach – Saturday March 30th

SUMASA is proud to present it's major student-run event - SPER'2013 Sustainable Perspectives Symposium: The Systems Approach. In order to develop viable solutions to the problems facing our global society, we need to understand how to think sustainably -- and systematically. SPER'2013 will include a half-day symposium of dynamic speakers across many industries, and a panel discussion that will all provide a first-hand look at applied systems thinking. Keynote speaker, Elizabeth Thompson of the Buckminster Fuller Institute, will unpack the core concepts of systems thinking and how they can be implemented to solutions for climate change, environmental degradation, and economic instability. An interactive workshop will explore previous winners of the BFI's Challenge and provide a first-hand look at applied systems thinking.
